Collaborative Intelligence?

Greetings Adam!

I am intrigued by this term and would like to share my thoughts on what I believe would be an example of "collaborative intelligence". In my speech communications class for Criminal Justice students, they are required to do a mock trial, involving their peers and the staff at our campus. They are responsible to compose their own scripts, as well as the crime itself, etc. They do all of the work themselves, and I supervise, making sure they are all on task and have the necessary legal documents they need to be successful. (e.g., subpoenas, exact wording for court room jargon, etc.). This type of activity could be seen as collaboration, however, I believe that since it involves a "group think" atmosphere, it could also be labeled as collaborative intelligence. They all have to put their heads together and apply the knowledge they have obtained from their criminal law classes. Not only is the final product of the mock trial entertaining for our spectators, but it is "real skills for the real world" here on our campus, which is what the key theme is here at Remington. Businessess are looking for educated individuals that not only possess book knowledge, but have a basic foundation for what is expected of them in the real world.

I would love to hear about your assignment for the social networking you were required to do. I, too, have been given this assignment, and while I have been on facebook awhile and am used to it, I do not understand this ning.com stuff yet....lol....I have created my own network, called Career Colleges (I think that is the name) and I don't know where to begin to invite people or finish making my site to look professional. Do you have any insightful suggestions you could please share with me? This is for my EdD from NCU (NorthCentral University out of Phoenix).

Hi Eve

Thank you for your reply. That sounds like a good example of collaboration. You mention two terms that pop up in this area ("group think" and collaborative intelligence). There seem to be many terms that fall into this area, and I'm trying to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Does "collaborative intelligence" mean anything in concrete terms? Is it different from all the other terms in this area. So far I'm inclined to conlude that it's another loosely defined term mixed in with some hype. Does it mean any more than "collaboration"?

Dear Adam,

How exciting (?!) to have an opportunity to talk about collaborative intelligence. Years ago I did a literature
search on Systems Analysis (SA), and being a Physics Teachers in HS, I attended PDs on systems modeling. It appears that we forget that Systems Analysis ( a basis for collaborative Intelligence) was introduced after WWII. There was an International Society for Systems Analysis (and may be still is) in Philadelphia and SA was a fundamental method of policy making machanism of the US.
Collaborative Intelligence should be based on the premiss that one person can not solve problems of a complex mechanism, but through a multidisciplinary approach and a team work of people having a knowledge, or expertise on components of a system, there is a possibility to solve problems, make a prediction etc.

Have you come across any modern day uses of collaborative intelligence, or is it a phrase still waiting to spring into life?

I suppose at a general level CI encompasses most of what we refer to as collaboration, but is there anything that emphasises the intelligence bit specifically - I've not found anything so far...

Dear Adam, I just finished a Project in my Physics Classrooms , which was not a success, but better then nothing.
Here is an example of a collaborative intelligence provided intelligent people, work on a project.
We were creating a flow chart of the "World" with feedback links. Collaborative intelligence is a measure of the collaborative ability of a group or entity. Knowledge derived from collaborative efforts is increasing proportionally to the reach of the World Wide Web, collaborative groupware like Skype, NetMeeting, WebEx, and many others. I still think that a measure is a Systems Analysis approach.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collaborative_intelligence

I'm wondering how "collaborative intelligence" might differ from "collaboration"; or how it could emerge into something that is distinct and specific.

Here's an idea...

Collaboration with an emphasis on the "intelligence" aspect.

What's intelligence for starters?

Here's a model I use to get things straight in my own head:

Data: Raw measurements and quantified items [numbers].

Information: Data presented in a format that's easily grasped by people.

Knowledge: Network of facts (data + info).

Understanding: A model of a system / thing - having the ability to make predictions about the system's behaviour.

Intelligence … I'm still working on this one, but here goes…

Using the above to problem solve by using skills that:

* Set and interpret objectives

* Synthesise potential solutions

* Analyse and evaluate (potential solutions)

* Select the best solution

So, collaborative *intelligence* could focus on Internet collaboration tools [perhaps yet to be created] that help a group to:

* Set and interpret objectives

* Synthesise potential solutions

* Analyse and evaluate (potential solutions)

* Select the best solution

Any thoughts on:
* the above philosophy?
* how it could be implemented?

Hi Adam,

It starts to get even more fun! I think that there is a historical aspect of understanding of what is a collaborative intelligence present.
I think the use of statistics can be also useful. For example, the average thinking capacity in a population is not considered an intelligence. Intelligence is on one of the ends of the bell shaped curve.
However, being naturally smart does not include the notion of the expert knowledge.
Artificial intelligence is a substitute for that.
So, my understanding is that your philosophy includes a standard approach for one man problem solving task, but tasks ,which require a collaborative intelligence, which in its turn, uses the systems analysis, are based on the following sequence: identify a problem- identify all possible aspects and/or parts of the system- identify different experts, specialists from different fields-create a model- find components as targets for modification- explore the result- create a working model and implement it- see if it works-appoint a decision maker and ask a policymaker for support. Something like that.

Yes, something along those line - that could easily scale up to support lots of people working on "complex problems". Ultimately, perhaps it could become a rival to the super-computer (and future AI), in some areas.

Are we not all involved in a collaborative intelligence exchange at this very moment?

More mundane examples are: NASA Missions.....Computer programming......Architectual Design
Each of these activities requires "a Grand Design" and groups that complete their work, that are combined for the finished product.

According to the definition we should approach the task from all aspects of a system,
Hovewer, I think we do qualify as intelligent people, which are collaborating. The idea of Systems Analysis includes analysis, decision making process, computer applications and implementation .
And collaborative intelligence probably should use it, as it is used by all above named NASA Missions.....Computer programming......Architectual Design.

Systems Analysis is taught in Parker School in MA as a graduation project. It probably should be taught elsewhere.
