Video games now make up a significant part of the entertainment industry. Whether it be through a desktop computer, a dedicated games console, a smartphone, a tablet or a website, almost everyone in the developed world has engaged with a game at some point in their lives, many of them quite frequently.
With English very much the dominant language in the world of gaming, the opportunities for EFL and ESL students to engage with and develop their knowledge of English are almost endless. Games provide a rich context for language use that students need to derive meaning from and sometimes respond to in order to progress in the game and/or follow complex storylines.
But such learning does not just happen by itself. How can the potential for language development that these games provide be best made use of inside (and outside) the classroom? This session will present some lesson ideas based on games – not only lessons involving use of games but also lessons that do not require any games to be played – as well as discussing issues surrounding gaming in the classroom.
