If You Want Them To Write, You Have To Let Them Write About What They Know!

I never saw myself as a writer.  During my school days, good work was read out loud to the class and the rest was marked up in red ink.  Once, as an adult, I wrote something that someone said I should publish.  I gave it to a person that I respected so much for feedback.  He marked it up in red ink!  I threw it away.Today, I write mostly for me and I write about my life. I am also inspired by others who try to encourage instead of discourage writing.  That happened when I accidentally came…See More

A Week With Children With Autism

I have just finished working with a theater academy designed specifically for children with autism.  It was one of the most profound weeks of my life. I started writing a blog entry on the Saturday before entitled "There's Always Plan B."  It was a collection of my thoughts from all the individual interviews we did with each family during the previous month.  The blog posts then continued as a chronicle of each day.  I would love any anyone interested to read about this journey by following the…See More

Dealing with the Stress of Change

Our district is in the middle of many change initiatives that are focused on developing a different accountability system for student learning. The drive is coming from the School Board and is fueled by everything they have been reading in "The World is Flat", "Disrupting Class", and more.Although small task force groups have attempted to grapple with what needs to change with our current graduation requirements and grading system, the groups fall short of being able to make meaningful creative…See More

Hi Jane,
I thought i would fill you in with a bit of my history. I turned 60 in December. I have been married for 30 years. My wife and I have 4 kids. I started teaching when I was 33 years old, and taught young adults for 17 years. In 2001 I received a Masters Degree in Distance Education and in 2002 I started an online tutoring company.

Over the past 8 years I have spent a lot of time learning how kids learn. I have written a couple of books and more importantly have arrived at some startling conclusions that are aligned with some of the major thinkers in education today.

I had replied to your comment earlier so thought I would add this and hope to continue the conversation when we both have time.

Reviews

"The depth of your observations from last night is still resonating with me. I'm trying to think of another interview I've given where the questioner understood the material so well that he/she so regularly (and fluidly) went into new intellectual territory. I can't think of any. Pretty amazing. Thank you."
