I feel that even though the schools didn't intend this software to be used as harmful, they still intended it to spy, which is against the law. Parents should have been notified about the software installed on the computers so that they know…

Dear Kiwi, Parents have a right to influence their kids development in blocking the "gay" word. You probably are not aware that quite a number of kids are approached by gay people and through that experience non genetic gays turn into…

Hi John, I see your point of view in blocking terms that could potentially be used in searching for pornographic websites, but that can also include an array of terms that could mean almost anything. So where do we draw the line? My issue with an…

Hey Kiwi, Since we do not know what the other keywords were, it may be premature to accuse anyone of being homophobic. I have friends and relatives that live wonderful lives. They happen to be GAY! WHO CARES? If I were designing a program to…

Internet Parental Control Blocks the Word 'Gay' - Is this Justifiable?

Many parents and educators turn to internet controls to ensure theirkids don't run into any harmful or inappropriate content. However, onesecurity suite, CA Internet, has also blocked the word "gay," and frommy point of view, I find that this is taking keyword blocking way toofar. Do youthink blocking the word 'Gay' is justified in this case? Or is this justanother sign on homophobia in our society? You can find thefull article…See More

Interactive Whiteboard Technology Excites UK Educators

UK Educators are getting quite excited over their latest Whiteboardtechnology which allows them to share materials and resources rightacross the board. Even those who do not have access to Whiteboards willbe able to get in on the action though, by using a Common File Format(CFF). The CFF will allow teachers to open the documents in any wordprocessor and also gives them the option to edit and change the materialin any way. Apparently, this technology will not be seen inNorth American anytime…See More

Spring Break is right around the corner (some have already began theirmid-season vacations) and Kiwi put together a list of tips and faux pasfor both students and parents to consider during their holiday. A simpleGoogle search on 'Spring Break' will provide a myriad of picturesdisplaying both young guys and girls, half naked and doing things that Iam sure most teachers and parents would not approve of. Of course notall kids and teens will engage in the typical MTV type Spring Break,…See More

School Uses Webcams to Spy on Students - Is This Ethical?

A school district in Pennsylvania is in a bit of trouble after allegedly using webcams on school laptops to monitor their students in and outside of school using spy software. The students and parents were uninformed about the use of this software and discovered it only after one student was called to his principal's office for bad behavior in his home. The principal then used a picture taken with the spy software to prove his case. While the school district continues to maintain that they did…See More

Cyber Bullying vs. Freedom of Speech

I've just come across yet another case that calls into question just howinvolved a school should be when it comes to disciplining cyberbullying. A student in Florida is suing her former principal after shewas suspended back in 2007 for creating a Facebook criticizing one ofher teachers. The page, which was up only for a few days, had currentand past students commenting on the teacher's abilities, some for andsome against. Two months later, the student, Katherine Evans, was called into…See More

In the last few weeks, I have come across a slew of cyber bullying cases, each becoming more serious than the last. But it was the story of a young girl named Phoebe Prince that really hit home.

Phoebe Prince, 15, committed suicide due to what reports are saying was a case of cyber bullying. The young teen was victim to harassing Internet and text messages from alleged older…

"The depth of your observations from last night is still resonating with me. I'm trying to think of another interview I've given where the questioner understood the material so well that he/she so regularly (and fluidly) went into new intellectual territory. I can't think of any. Pretty amazing. Thank you."
