STEM to STEAM

RSID's (Rhode Island School Of Design) participation in promoting STEAM, is only part of a greater groundswell of the appreciation of a balanced, project based learning platform. Art and science ALSO encompasses the humanities. I have spoken to this in terms of the process of creating animation (Animating STEM) regarding the idea of knowledge being relayed through story AND the subtext of metaphor. When one sees the multiple levels of learning, complementing and resonating between subjects, the…See More

About Me
Engineer, Animator, STEM advocate, Education Facilitator, Filmmaker, Writer, Thinker (LOL should I say that? Well, it's true)

I am very keen on making education available and appreciated.
The future of education is a constantly evolving area of concern and discussion. As our culture and our definition of culture evolves, we need to be evaluating what is important to teach the next generation.
There was a time when relevance of knowledge was questioned and for some reason the question has been forgotten and caught up in budgetary quagmires run by persons more concerned with quarterly profits rather than the impacts of their decisions thirty years down the road.
There is a myth that having graduated from an institution was sufficient to access employment in one's field. As many people have discovered, this is not true and educational institutions do not tell the students (and their parents) the other ongoing agendas.

An Evolution of Learning: Have the Tools of Science Superceded "Hands-On" Exploration and Education?

It is acknowledged that tools help with the "perception" of knowledge. The magnifying glass, the telescope, and the microscope were objects that opened up an entirely new world. It is also acknowledged that people's fingers are too big to examine an amoeba, and people can't just walk up to the moon.

The other biggie in the knowledge game was "the drawing", the recording of information, but further to this was the "sequential" recording of data, which led…

When I saw this statement in a recent discussion... on another education forum on a different site, I went cold.

My feeling is that such a statement is only true if you create a situation where people are taught to believe it.....

It seems to me that this is one of those self-fulfilling prophesies…

Reviews

"The depth of your observations from last night is still resonating with me. I'm trying to think of another interview I've given where the questioner understood the material so well that he/she so regularly (and fluidly) went into new intellectual territory. I can't think of any. Pretty amazing. Thank you."
