Learn about how programming a computer can be used to learn rich mathematical ideas.

Full Session Description:

In this session, we will explore different programming environments for kids, and learn how we can use those programming environments to enrich and deepen students' understanding of mathematics. We will explore using programming projects as assessment for and of learning. Some specific programming tools we will look into are Google's Blockly, Turtle Art, Scratch, the Khan Academy Computer Science area, and Visual Python. While one could make the argument that programming is a useful technical skill to learn, I will focus on the argument that learning how to program helps students learn the big ideas in mathematics, in a structured inquiry-based environment.
