Topic: Facebook groups have become good communities of practice that enhance learners' learning.
Done by: Beautiful Minds: Nada Saeed, ImenBrief Candle, Prim Rose and Sara Alg
Under the supervision of Dr: Murad Saeed
Communities of practice (CoP) are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly. Facebook now attracts and gathers millions of users every day. It is used in several fields such as learning...Many groups have been formed for the sake of knowledge, and they reflect clearly the community of practice. Communities of Practice provide a new type in education field; this fact can have both advantages and disadvantages.
Learning in Facebook groups is useful for learners in creative and interactive way. Firstly, community of practice is a lovely new way in communication effective learning, actually it is fun, and it makes the learners work and enjoy. As it is a chance for meeting new friends from different countries with different cultures. Secondly, it is a wide gate for exchange knowledge, learners can exchange information in many fields farther than the main subject of the learning group, such as religions, customs, history of nations ….etc Next, community of practice considered a new society holds good moral meanings where a greater spirit of cooperation appears in Facebook group, due to the fact that Facebook members are mostly from people who loves social team spirit. Then, community of practice Provides a good opportunity for competition among learners, as each one want to be the best that's why he will do a great efforts to reach this aim and that will achieve a great results at the end of learning for the whole group. Besides, community of practice can create the spirit of responsibility. We find the learners try to do their work honestly and seriously as each one of them is responsible to the other. In addition to all of that, community of practice can considered as a fair way in evaluation, where the teachers in these groups don’t evaluate what the learners have done that’s why they focus on ameliorating their levels rather than getting marks as well as praise. Finally, these groups shortened the time and distance for access to information. Wherever you are in this world you may get lessons and share in discussions on Facebook group, also there is no need to waste your time in grooming that's enough to login by tidy thoughts and strong will.
Despite the many advantages of learning through Facebook groups, this does not mean that they do not carry some drawbacks. Cheat learners in Facebook groups can't be controlled; as cheating is widely spreads in this open environment. even lazy learners don’t bother themselves; they just copy and paste the answers, and some forget even to erase the user’s name from which he stole the answer. In addition to that , there is no equal in the educational capacity of the countries of the learners, that cause a difficulty in distribution efficiency of the teacher to everyone equally, that’s why we suggest to divide the learners into semi-groups (beginners and advanced). Also, learning in Facebook groups may lose its seriousness; as a result of losing control of funny and unwatched acts, it wastes great amount of teachers' efforts. Too , Lack of oversight in these groups constitute a significant risk; as If the organizers of the group do not have the competence required, this will cause a disaster as the spread of information through these communities faster and more distributed. Facebook group may lose some of the exciting. As the interactions of reality classes among learners; like the spontaneous exclamation expressions and looks… etc On the other hand, it can make the learner not care about his real studies and just want to learn in those groups which bring him a lot of things not found in the classrooms. As an example of: fun, lack of affectation, friendly relationship between teacher and learners… etc Farther more, Facebook groups can't help in treating the shyness in timid personalities. As it wastes a lot of realistic opportunities to deal with classmates and friends. Also it can't help in facing the others eyes and their criticisms. Finally, Bad effects of computers on learners health. as a result of spending a long time near to computers it meets bad effects on the eyes of learners. even their minds which can get tired and not able to focus on what they are reading.
To conclude, we say that learning through Facebook is a sword of two edges, as we show previously that Community Of Practice carries a lot of negatives and couldn't adopted in all fields of education, however this new way adds a lot of fun and practice and provided quick and effective access to information and educational development of social skills. And On the whole, we believe that the specialists will provide the props needed, because it is the time of the information revolution and Facebook groups is one of new learning tools.…
