Learning Through New Technologies at High School

New Zealand High Schools are placing time and money into development of learning management systems. What experiences do others have of using this technology? Our experience so far has been that the potential is huge, but the uptake can be very slow. Very good technical support is needed and continuous opportunities for staff to learn have to be provided.

Thanks Robin. I'm finally getting around to clearing some of my emails. Sounds like you've had some colourful experiences especially with your theatre work. I agree with you, schools have been very slow to provide professional development for teachers with regards to new technologies. With the new digital curriculum that's been brought in this year I think it's pretty unfair that teachers are expected to teach areas like programming and html coding if it's a completely new area for them.

I think schools should link up and exchange teachers skills sets. For instance I'm quite adapt at web design but not so good on excel, so maybe we could swap classes and teach remotely. Students would have the support of their teacher in the classroom and lessons could be given via video conferencing with resources held on Moodle for instance.

Hi Robin

All of my senior classes have had a full lesson devoted to memory techniques that would help them in their learning and exam preparation. The students are really surprised with themselves when they find they can remember complex things through some examples and they get excited when they discover the potential of these techniques.

However, for these techniques to work takes a little extra effort on the learner's behalf. At the moment it is down to individual learners to apply the techniques as they see fit but there is certainly some mileage in meeting the learners half way by providing them with memory aids for topics learned in the classroom.
