Change the World With an Online Graduate Degree

If you are no longer in love with your chosen career, then you are not alone. In 2013, CNBC reported that almost half of all employees across the globe are unhappy in their jobs. If your dissatisfaction is causing you to consider a career shift, then you might consider going to work for the promotion of a cause you believe in. Earning a graduate degree is one way to facilitate this transition because you obtain the option to change your career or at least alter its current course.

If, like most people, you do not have the option to simply quit your job and go back to school full-time, then you can earn your degree online while continuing to work in your industry. Fortunately, the options for accredited online graduate programs continue to increase. Here are some degrees within social and public service fields that are currently available online.

Social Work

With a degree in social work, you have numerous options for helping people in need. The Master of Social Work is now offered online by several accredited institutions. Depending on your previous education and the number of credits you want to take at one time, an online MSW degree may take anywhere from one to four years to complete.

Most social work programs offer participants education in various disciplines while still allowing them to focus their studies on particular areas of interest. The most common concentrations are mental health, families and children, gerontology and aging, communities, corporations, military, and healthcare. Within these concentrations, there are numerous roles that you may fill.

Law and Public Policy

If you have worked in your field for enough time to recognize the problems within it, then you may be able to fix these problems by entering the sphere of public policy. Entering a program such as the USC MPA program will give you the tools you need to promote and implement policy changes. You will also learn how to manage the social and political issues that are central to making these changes successful over time.

Becoming educated in the law is another way to address the problems within your industry. When you thoroughly understand the regulations of your field, you will have a better idea of how you can use or alter them to improve it. There are a few different online law degrees available. For example, the USC LLM degree is a great option for international students who want to become familiar with US laws and regulations. Because this program also offers a business law certificate, participants have diverse options for implementing the knowledge they obtain from their studies.

Counseling

By earning a counseling degree online, you can prepare yourself to enter a profession geared solely to helping others. Counselors can work in a variety of settings, from schools to rehabilitation facilities. You may choose a program that is concentrated on one of these areas, or you may prefer one that is more general in nature.

Because of the nature of the counseling profession, many online programs do require you to complete clinical practice hours in addition to online coursework. Your advisor should be able to help you find an appropriate setting within your community where you can undergo the required training.

Work That Inspires You

No matter what line of work you are in, all jobs have their pros and cons. However, when you look back on your career, you will be more satisfied if you know you made a difference in the world. The decision to make a career shift to a service-oriented position can be a scary one, but if you do make the leap, you may ultimately be happier with your life’s work. Be sure to review all of your options for online graduate degrees in order to find the one that best complements your existing experience and passions.
