Understanding the Basics of Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a new discipline in the field of medical science which is getting huge traction these days among individuals particularly teenagers and youth. The reason for this is that these days’ people are very much concerned about their outlook particularly their face and willing to go to any extent to restore their natural face. This creates a huge opportunity for physicians who intend to specialize in the domain of facial surgery and allied services.

Thus Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are those physicians who are specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities and anomalies pertaining to the facial complex and skeleton including the jaws and oral cavity.

Actually these are those physicians who go on to spend another four years in a hospital-based residency program for surgery after completion of their four years of dental school. These physicians are also well-trained in the techniques of emergency medicine, general surgery and anesthesiology.

What Procedures are generally Performed by Oral Surgeons

Though there are many procedures these specialists perform but some of the most common of them are as follows:

Tooth extractions- Extraction of tooth or tooth extraction is one of the most common procedures that are performed by these specialists. This is performed when we face problems with our wisdom teeth or some way are impacted. These specialists are generally certified by American Medical Association and have a valid license. However it is not the only board that issue license as there are many other boards but it is the most reputed one in the jurisdiction of United States.

Corrective Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery- This is another procedure that is being performed by these specialists. Unlike the previous one this is performed when orthodontics is not enough to treat the anomaly and surgical intervention is necessary. In other words this is performed when someone suffer from birth defects, congenital abnormalities or birth defects. Some other important cases when this surgery performed are when someone suffers from severe orthodontic conditions, skeletal problems and other disorders.

Oral surgeons often work closely with orthodontists in planning and carrying out this type of surgery, which may be needed when orthodontics alone can’t correct the problem.

Palate Surgery or Cleft lip surgery- This is the third kind of surgery which is generally performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons and is generally performed to correct the changes in facial structure caused by various kinds of birth defects.

These kinds of surgery are required when someone meets with traumatic dental injury or facial trauma that may occur due to an auto accident, a work place injury or many other causes. These kinds of surgeries are carried out by experts like Haithem Elhadi Babiker MD who has been working I this domain since a while.
